Hi, We are Info360 /

The place where we write some words

Mahtab Uddin Ahmed-Robi's Bangladeshi CEO

Three decades have already passed since the start of cell phones in the country. Now three of the four operators are foreign, one is government. An operator has also been shut down. In this long journey, the only Bangladeshi  CEO is Mahatab Uddin Ahmed, who is now leading the country's second-largest operator, Robi Axiata. Malaysia-based telecommunications company Axiata Berhad now owns a majority stake in Robi.

Bangladeshis have shown success in the position of CEO or co-founder in food and commodities merchandising companies, banks or any other foreign institution. Bangladeshi Mahtab Uddin is giving proof of the qualification in the telecommunication company. He has also grained success. Robi, who was in a big loss, is now seeing the face of profit. The digital world is preparing for something bigger in the future by expanding services.
Mahtabuddin is a student of accounting. He has to keep account of the company's money. But how did he get into today's position?
To know how he handles a complex technology company like telecommunications, you have to read the entire article.

His childhood and growing up

Mahtab Uddin was born in the 8th of Dhaka. However, early childhood was spent in Karachi, West Pakistan. The rest of the family returned to Dhaka with the exception of Mahtab Uddin's father at the beginning of the country's independence war. After SSC from Ahmed Bawani Academy, Mahtab Uddin was admitted to Notre Dame College. From there in the Department of Accounting at Dhaka University, towards the end of the year, he finished his studies at Dhaka University and ICMA.

He supposed to be a businessman

Mahtabuddin wanted to be a businessman. There was no businessman in the family. His father also wanted the big boy to go into business. With the goal of doing business, Mahtabuddin joins the job to learn the business. At the outset, he joined the financial institution IDLC to control the financial issues. He joined Unilever for two years, working there for two years. But there he was promoted one by one, doing good work. As a result, the goal of doing business is somewhat distracted. The wish is to completely eliminate it, after marriage. The wife's condition was Fatima's condition, she would not marry a businessman. Mahtabuddin was no longer traded.

He was promoted to Commercial Manager, Ice Cream division in Pakistan under Ulilever. Mahtabuddin said, "I have learned a lot in Pakistan. Hold on, ice cream. When it is sold, the air is like 5 percent of it. Our telecommunications companies are told we sell air. People don't see the air that sells ice cream (laughs). '

A few years later, Mahtab Uddin returned to Bangladesh with the post of Financial Controller. Then go to Dubai. He was in the control of the Group Financial Controller in eight regional countries. Mahtab Uddin said, "There I saw how to manage the business of the group. That was a great experience. ' After staying in Dubai for three years, Mahtabuddin returned to Dhaka to join Unilever again as the National Finance Director.

Finally at Robi

Mahtabuddin joined Robi as CFO in 2010. He became Chief Operating Officer or COO in the 2014. And he became CEO in 2016. The CEO of Robi was then Michael Kuener. He helps Mahtabuddin to become CEO.
He was sent to Harvard University to study before moving to the top post. After completing the course, He had to work for six months in Axiata Malaysia. At this time, Axiata acquired Ncell, Nepal's top operator. Mahtab worked as the project manager for the acquisition of Ncell. From there it was announced that Robi was going to get a Bengali man for the first time as CEO.

Turn Robi into a profitable operator

When Mahtabuddin took charge at Robi, the complexity of integrating Robi-Airtel was going on. The company began to suffer from the integration delay in the 21st. Robi loses market due to registration of biometric SIM. There were also huge losses, which amounted to Tk 600 crore. Robi was the worst year in business terms between 1997 to 2019.

Mahtabuddin successfully consolidated. Robi has taken the lead in launching Four-G (fourth generation Internet services). Under his leadership, Robi started Four-G (4G) in 65 districts. He strengthened the financial base of the organization by reducing unnecessary expenses.

Now, most of the customers are coming to Robi instead of the other operator. Robi catched up about two-third of the customers that have switched operators by (MNP) service in the first three months of its roll-out. (Source-The daily star)

Mahtab Uddin credited the employees for their success!

The 5 advice of Mahatab Uddin Ahmed

  •  To work in telecommunication
  • Working in a telecommunications company requires a digital mindset. Must be far-sighted. Robi does not take manpower just by looking at academic results. The main consideration is how much digital knowledge he or she has.

  •  You must take risk
  • New things have to be tested. Some could be fail but you will succeed.
  • Deficiency in education
  • What is taught at the university is not satisfactory. In the fourth industrial revolution, people's employment will decline, that's not right. Rather, the concept of efficiency will change.
  • For students
  • Whatever is taught in the university, you have to study it yourself. In the Internet age, knowledge is at hand. Analytics, block chains, IoT (Internet of Things), AI (artificial intelligence) - all they need to know, whether to be a student or a student.
  • Immense potential
  • There are many new startup companies now using technology. So after completing studies, you can become an entrepreneur if you want young people, not just jobs. In this regard, Robi is helping the youth through various activities.

Digital Bangladesh is our nation’s dream a new world. It was basically declared in 2008 election manifesto to build up Bangladesh as a digital one by prime minister Sheikh Hasina. After 50 year of independence, the main goal is to achieve middle-income status country by 2021 and developed status by 2041.

The four key objectives of "Digital Bangladesh" are:

Vision:2021

Education sector :
ICT minister Mustafa jbbar said on November 18 that ICT labs and multimedia classrooms would be set up every educational institute within next 2 years.ICT subject mandatory from school level.Computer labs will be established for every school. All kind of form fillup will be in online and online course will be available. Government would free education up to degree.

ICT sector:

Government focus on using and developing ICT for the accomplishment of national vision. So the government is now implementating projects with the support from UNDP, USAID and various donor agencies. As a part of those project,  access to information (a2i) was launched in 2010. It has established more than 5400 digital center over the country. These center provide service including land record, digital birth registration system, eTIN (electronic tax identification number), NID database, overseas job application, mobile financial service etc with modern technology. Nowdays citizens are getting any kind of information from digital info center union and upozila parishad. A noteworthy issue is that new and modern technology replace the older devices. These updated technology help us to build and foster our IT industry. IT related training will be provided to 2 lakh youths of the country by the 2021.

E-commerce sector:

Recently the e-commerce sector is booming in Bangladesh. With better opportunity, increasing web population, the expectancy of e-commerce is dramatically growing for the last couple of years.
In this modern era, we can hardly do our work without technology. The utilization of internet
technology is exceptionally common in every single way of our activity. Now we can utilize the use of internet in e-commerce business. E-commerce run with production of products and goods, marketing, delivery, service, payment with the use of internet. Our country’s central bank authority,  the Bangladesh bank permitted online transaction since 2009 and purchase of goods and service online with using credit cards since 2013. In Bangladesh the mobile internet users is growing day by day. According to the (ITU) International telecommunication union, the number of internet users was 6.5% of the population in 2013 and it was 18.2% in 2017 and it’s continously growing.

Currently four types of e-commerce are noticeable in Bangladesh :

1. Business to Business (B2B)
2. Business to consumer (B2C)
3. Consumer to Consumer (C2C)
4. Consumer to Employee (C2E)

In order to encourage e-commerce ICT 2006 was included. The e-commerce association of Bangladesh (e-cab) listed 700 e-commerce site and 8,000 e-commerce Facebook pages in Bangladesh. Facebook pages is a polular way of selling products, advertising and reach to customer easily. Additionally, e-commerce is largly dependent on Mobile Financial service (MFS) as it's a easy way of payment. According to e-cab report 2017, 10 billion taka take place in transaction on e-commerce sites per year.
Althrough there are still some challenges  including privacy policy, online payment system, online fraud, delivery issue. Bangladesh leading towards to  bright future in e-commerce sector. If the e-commerce companies make sure their customers security and provide the best service the industry will be a bright future.

Number of internet users cross 9cr and mobile user 15cr:
The number of internet users across the world is rising day by day. We also not falling behind the race. Bangladesh ranked 5th top internet user in Asia. According to BTRC survey, currently the number of internet users crosses 9 crore which was only 1 lakh in 2000 and the number of mobile subscribers reach 15.5 crore.

Bangladesh now on 5G expressway:
5G will be available in Bangladesh from the first quarter of next year. 5G will not only related with telecom operator it will be boost every sector. The government launched 4G in 2018 February and 3G service.

MNP service:
Mobile number portability (MNP) is a common service in developed country in the world. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Council (BTRC) launched the service for the first time in Bangladesh. It allows customers to switch any operator without changing their 11-digit mobile phone number.

Bangabandhu -1 satellite:
Bangabandhu -1 satellite is the first communication satellite of Bangladesh was successfully launched from Florida, United Sates. Private TV Channels of Bangladesh can take service fron the satellite. The satellite has 40 transponders. At the point of government,  Bangladesh will use 20 transponders and other will be rent out to other countries. The total consumption of the satellite was about 2,765 crore.

We may have a long way to go and there is many issue which is very complicated, depend on many other factor and there is no quick solution. However, the process already started and hopefully we will be able to turn our country into a digital Bangladesh by bringing an all round development.
